Hemorrhoid Banding

Hemorrhoid Banding

Quick, effective relief from internal hemorrhoids — right in our office.

What Is Hemorrhoid Banding?

Hemorrhoid banding (rubber band ligation) is a safe, effective, in-office treatment for internal hemorrhoids. During the procedure, your doctor places a tiny rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid, which cuts off its blood supply. The hemorrhoid then shrinks and falls off within a few days to a week. Most patients experience significant relief from their symptoms.

This is one of the most common treatments for internal hemorrhoids and has been used safely for decades. It is performed right in our office — no operating room, no general anesthesia, and no lengthy recovery.

Why Would I Need Hemorrhoid Banding?

  • Bleeding during bowel movements — the most common symptom of internal hemorrhoids
  • Rectal bleeding — any unexplained bleeding should be evaluated
  • Prolapse — hemorrhoids that protrude during bowel movements
  • Symptoms not responding to conservative treatment — when dietary changes, fiber, and topical treatments have not provided adequate relief

What to Expect

Minimal preparation is needed — you may be asked to use an enema before the appointment. The procedure takes just a few minutes. Your doctor uses a special instrument to place a small rubber band at the base of the hemorrhoid. You may feel some pressure or mild discomfort, but most patients find the procedure quite tolerable. No anesthesia or sedation is needed.

After the procedure, you can drive yourself home and return to normal activities immediately. You may experience mild discomfort or an urge to have a bowel movement for the first day or two. Over-the-counter pain relievers and warm baths can help. The banded hemorrhoid typically falls off within a week.

Important Note

Rectal bleeding should always be evaluated by a physician to determine its cause. While hemorrhoids are a common and benign cause, bleeding can also be a sign of more serious conditions. Please do not assume bleeding is “just hemorrhoids” — schedule an evaluation.
