EGD (Upper Endoscopy)

EGD (Upper Endoscopy)

A minimally invasive look at your upper digestive tract.

What Is an EGD?

An EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy), also called an upper endoscopy, is a procedure that allows your doctor to examine the lining of your esophagus, stomach, and the first part of your small intestine (duodenum). A thin, flexible tube called an endoscope is passed through your mouth and gently advanced through your upper digestive tract. The endoscope has a camera and light that transmits clear images to a monitor.

Why Would I Need an EGD?

  • Chronic acid reflux or heartburn — especially if symptoms persist despite medication, or if you have difficulty swallowing
  • Upper abdominal pain — that does not have a clear diagnosis
  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) — feeling like food gets stuck when you swallow
  • Nausea and vomiting — persistent or unexplained
  • Unexplained weight loss — when combined with other upper GI symptoms
  • Anemia or GI bleeding — to identify the source of blood loss
  • Suspected ulcers — to diagnose and sometimes treat stomach or duodenal ulcers
  • Barrett’s esophagus surveillance — monitoring patients with this precancerous condition

What to Expect

Before the Procedure

You will need to fast (no food or drink) for at least 6 to 8 hours before your EGD. This ensures your stomach is empty so your doctor has a clear view. Our team will provide specific instructions.

During the Procedure

You will receive sedation through an IV, so you will be comfortable and relaxed. A numbing spray may be applied to your throat. The procedure typically takes 15 to 30 minutes. Your doctor may take small tissue samples (biopsies) for laboratory analysis, or perform therapeutic interventions such as stretching a narrowed area or stopping bleeding.

After the Procedure

You will rest in our recovery area until the sedation wears off. You may have a mild sore throat for a day or two. You will need someone to drive you home. Most patients can return to normal activities the next day.

Therapeutic Capabilities

EGD is not just diagnostic. During the procedure, your doctor can also treat certain conditions — such as stretching narrowed areas (dilation), stopping active bleeding, removing small growths, or placing stents. This means some problems can be addressed in a single visit.
